Multidimensional Approach to Family-Centered Sex Therapy

The foundation of The AFFECT Project is the connection between clinicians and the families they serve. This research centers on families seeking healthier, more authentic ways of living and relating. Initial recruitment will focus on channels where adolescents and parents are already engaged, including:

Churches
Schools
Children’s hospitals
Family courts
Juvenile courts

Clinicians participating in the research will receive training informed by research outcomes and will be provided with standardized procedural frameworks for working with clients. While therapeutic styles and approaches may vary, the research will maintain consistency in training, assessment tools, feedback mechanisms, and clinical consultation. This structure supports the integrity of a mixed-methods approach to data collection.

Family Therapy

A collaborative space where all or part of the family unit comes together to explore patterns, improve communication, and heal relational wounds. In the AFFECT framework, family therapy supports the whole system in addressing sexual trauma, identity development, and shared values, helping families move toward greater connection, safety, and mutual understanding.

Couples/Parents Therapy

Focused on the parenting or caregiving partnership, this therapy helps adults align on values, co-regulation, boundaries, and responses to children’s or adolescents’ evolving identities and needs. Within the AFFECT framework, couples and co-parents are supported in strengthening their partnership so they can offer a united, affirming, and resilient family environment.

Individual Therapy

Provides one-on-one support for youth or adults navigating shame, trauma, sexual identity, boundaries, or emotional regulation. This service fosters autonomy and healing while supporting the individual’s role within the broader family system. It is often integrated with family or group work in the AFFECT model.

Group Therapy

Delivered as either support or psychoeducation groups, these spaces offer youth and caregivers shared learning, validation, and skills-building. Group therapy within the AFFECT program reinforces community, normalizes experiences related to sexuality and trauma, and provides parallel support to individuals and their families.
